Aside from the abuse itself, the cost of the tragic events costs the United States billions of dollars each year. Every day, approximately 4 children in the United States die resulting from child abuse and the majority are under 5-years-old (Fromm). Sex trafficking is defined as â€Å"The enslavement of unwilling people who are coerced into a condition for sexual exploitation† (Jefft 221). â€Å"It has been estimated by the U.S. State Department that between 700,000 and 2,000,000 people are trafficked each year worldwide, and 80% of them are being exploited as sexual slaves† (Territo 3). Sex trafficking is a common problem often ignored by society, but by providing awareness and taking action through new policies, and the donation of time and money, this problem can be reduced. (Lauren, p.64) This less-than-flattering description of our generation has since been expanded by the media to the point that myself and my peers are described as a bunch of apathetic slackers unconcerned with family values, godless cynics resentful of the preceding generations. Since Douglas Couplands Book Generation X came out in 1991, many things have been said about the twentysomethings.Labeled by Coupland and the media as Generation X. Although the name has stuck, Couplands book is virtually impossible to find. Why is that? Could it be because Generation X describes us, me, everyone who was born between the years of 1963-1983 as white and privileged and living in a suburb near you (Giles, p4). In addition, Advertising Age referred to Generation Xers as That cynical, purple-haired blob watching TV. (Giles, p2)What makes our generation so special, is that we have proven them all wrong. Generation X consists of those between the ages 13 and 33 years of age. We as a group have become the productive, interested, and hardworking individuals that we are today. We have grown to realize that the futures undiscovered country is awaiting our arrival, and is there for the taking. It isnt at all ironic that during our short lives the world has seen so many changes. Through the work of our generation and the reactions of the Baby Boomers generation, we have helped turn this world into a new age of wisdom; a cut-the-crap, truth seeking generation, both richer and poorer because of it. Do not feel threatened, however, our future, our generations future, and the future of the human race, is in the hands of the most informed generation to date. Growing up in an ever shrinking world. Xers mostly share an impatience with racism, greed, and ignorance (Lauren, p. 70). The common use of the computer opened the ever expanding horizons to the highways of the world throughout cyberspace. Fact be known Gen X is neither white, nor rich, nor do they all live in a suburb near you. 70 percent of Xers are white, while 13 percent are black, 12 percent Hispanic, 4 percent Asian, and 1 percent are Native American (Giles, p4). In addition, according to a recent survey conducted by t he sociology department at the University of Maryland, Generation Xers can now be classified by the term Neat (Carnoy, p.80) Dr. John P. Robinson recently supervised a telephone survey and concluded that 57 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds said that having a neat and clean house was very important to them (Carnoy, p. 80). When compared to the Baby boomers, only 48 percent of the 30- to 49-year-olds felt the same way (Carnoy, p.80)Examples proving that Generation X is not a bunch of slackers are prevalent all through our society today. Swing, Might, Paper, Curio, and myriad other magazines are all published by Xers, for Xers. T.A.G. formally known as The Alternative Group is after representation. For too long our needs (Generation X) have gone ignored in our local, state, and national governments. In truth, we hope to be a grassroots lobbying force for our age group. Thousands of Xers are popping up all over the place, taking the reins of society and quietly changing America. Young People are less commited to their jobs now. My father started working for ATT as soon as he graduated from college and he just retired last year, at 55, I dont know anyone my age who is likely to have the same situation. These days, three or four years is the longest anyone stays at one company. People want more out of life than just a job. They want to be doing something they love, and they want to move up fast. Its no longer a sign of weakness to leave a job after a short stint. Now, it shows that youre ambitious. (Schiman, Swing)The Boring Twenties: Grow Up, Crybabies. Youre Americas Luckiest Generation. Headlined the Washington Times (Giles,p2) Unfortunately, but we arent Americas luckiest children. More than two-thirds of todays college and university students receive some sort of financial assistance during their academic career (T.A.G., Aid). It is no wonder then, that when the Congress begun talk of cutting financial aid, many campuses across the country made their voic e heard loud and clear. On top of that, many graduates entering the work force did so during the recession of 1990-1991. Today the average full-time salary for a male between twenty-five and thirty-four is $26,197; the average for a female is $21,510 (Giles, p.4) For Generation Xers to grow up in homes where the divorce rate even hit 50% (Leveridge, p15) the could be considered Americas unluckiest children. The recent resurgence of retired people moving closer to college campuses is astounding. Through the use of rhetorical questions â€Å"who are these shadows† through this quote he shows us that in the beginning he has no sense of belonging with that particular group of people. We see the use of peaceful imagery â€Å"moonlight plain† to show us that the shadows he may belong to are not necessarily dark and evil. In this poem we see how there’s a sense of mystery as to whether he belongs or not through the quote â€Å"The bearded faceless men† hence showing he does not belong. Finally in the poem â€Å"Wombat† we can see how different people view belonging through many different emotive quotes. We see how the wombat goes down a long road from not belonging to belonging, we see this through the quote â€Å"from f lag burner to patriot† this shows us that he felt through he never belonged but  with time came his sense of identity which played a major role in helping him belong. We also see his journey from not belonging to belonging because he burnt the Australian flag but later on in his life had it put up as an ironic symbol in his room hence, we see how it views the word belonging. This is evident that a person can go from belonging to not belonging and that belonging is viewed differently by different people. This can be linked back to the poem ancestors as in the poem peter feels as though he does not belong at all just when he burn down the Australian flag but later on goes to discover his identity and realizes the flag is a part of him while Lawson knows that he does not belong to his ancestor at the moment but may belong to them in the final destination reached in the peaceful nature in comparison it can also be linked back to wombat as in the poem we can see how he has no sense of belonging just as first but later on found out and established his own notion of belonging. Lisa Kristen’s speech astonished the audience by simply presenting lives of slaves all over the world, and it is undoubtedly a successful one: her voice low and grave, full of sympathy and grief; her photos soundless yet visually and emotionally powerful.Perhaps because Kristen has seen all these slaves with her own eyes, she talks in a way that makes people feel that these stories are no longer lives of mere strangers in some remote country, but lives of someone that the audience know of—lives of ordinary people, who should have had a peaceful life. Her speech leaves people ashamed of their ignorance about the seriousness of the existing slavery in the modern world. Among various groups of slaves witnessed by Lisa Kristen were sex slaves in Nepal. The story of a sex slave in Nepal usually starts with poverty.In a country where half of the population is unemployed, young girls and their family members are easily lured by the job promises made by the so-called â€Å"job hunters†. Poor young girls follow the â€Å"job hunters† in the hope of getting a well-paid job, and a decent life in big cities like Kathmandu. Very often, however, they end up in a filthy hell known as â€Å"the cabin restaurant†. There, they are trafficked as sex slaves. Curtains are drawn to provide privacy for each room in the restaurant, or to be more precise, to provide privacy for the customers’ sexual harassments.The girls are expected to serve food and drinks to these rooms, but more importantly, to satisfy the male customers’ demands so that the sale can boost. Eventually, the girls will have to, willing or not, start prostitute themselves to entertain the money payers (Mavrich, â€Å"City in Focus: Kathmandu, Nepal†). Girls that refuse to comply are often physically intimidated by the cabin owner; some are said to have been h it by wires, rods and hot spoons (Ruffins, â€Å"Rescuing Girls from Slavery†); others are threatened with defamation, blackmailing and police harassment (Regmi, â€Å"Plight of Cabin Keepers†).Some girls who had been rescued revealed that they had to â€Å"serve† twenty to twenty-five men a day (Trenwith, â€Å"The appalling side of Nepal sparks a woman's crusade†). People are certainly moved and re-educated when they hear about the life stories of the slaves, for it hurts to see and hear about those coarse hands, dust-covered faces and vacant looks. But what about afterwards? Will people still care, or will they go back to their comfortable home and gradually forget about the shock they once experienced during the speech because they have their own family and jobs to worry about?Or to think even further, when few people will be affected by slavery, should this be a world concern? The answer would be yes. This has nothing to do with personal interests, o r the defense of modernism, not even the development of the society. It’s all about humanity—the reason why people call themselves human beings. When colonialism was replaced by democracy, we call it progress, for the meaning of freedom, equality and humanity was realized and therefore fulfilled.Now the same realization is needed to fulfill them, so that the human race progresses rather than goes backwards. Few people are powerful enough to change slavery directly. Background Retention rate means the number of students converted to the percentage who persist to the next year of the college in which they enrol for the course. Eg: if a student enrols to first year of Bachelors degree in a college, he again joins the same college for the next year as well. Graduation rate means the number of students converted to percentage that completed and earned the bachelor degree within time limit. Generally 150% of the issued time limit is considered acceptable. Eg: 4 years bachelors degree completed by passing within 6 years of enrolment is counted and included in graduation rate. Recently much attention has been gained by Retention rates and Graduation rates. Many institutes providing higher education are recently focusing on improving their retention and graduation rates. They identified the key points which can improve retention rates and graduation rates at an institute (Hanover Research). The study published on IPEDS data found a not significant correlation between institute retention plans and graduation rate (Ronald Anthony Milon, 2006). Many of the studies were published which tried to find relation of retention rates and graduation rates with other environmental and social factors. None of the study tried to examine relation between retention rate and graduation rate. In this study we try to inspect relation between these two variables; retention rate and graduation rate. Method This study includes the data of 29 online education institutes of USA. The number of observations for this study is 29 and includes two variables. The two variables in the study, retention rates and graduation rates are continuous variables. These were described as mean and standard deviation. In addition, minimum and maximum were also calculated. To find the association between the variables correlation technique was used. Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated. To visually inspect the relation between the variables under the study scatter plot was plotted. To find the relation between the independent variable, retention rate (%) and dependent variable, graduation rate (%) regression analysis was carried out. Goodness of fit, Analysis of Variance and hypothesis testing for slope was also carried out. Value of Pearson correlation coefficient would lie between 0 to 1. Pearson correlation coefficient value close to 0 indicate no correlation and close to 1 indicates strong correlation. Value of goodness of fit (R-squared) will also lie between 0 to 1. Goodness of fit value close to 0 indicates poor fit and close to 1 indicates good fit. All the comparisons and hypothesis testing will be carried out at 5 % level of significance. Minimum Retention Rate of 4 % is for University of Phoenix and maximum Retention Rate of 100 % is for National University and Florida National College. Minimum Graduation Rate of 25 % was observed for South University and Western International University and maximum Graduation Rate of 61 % was observed for Florida National College. Association between the variables is visually inspected using the scatter plot presented below. The plot was plotted with retention rate as independent variable plotted on x axis and graduation rate as dependent variable plotted on y axis. Thus, visually a linear relationship can be observed between the two variables. The line if drawn will not be inclined to an angle of 45 but neither it would be parallel to x axis. With increase in retention rate graduation rate also increases gradually. Correlation was carried out using Excel Data Analysis Toolpak. Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.67 was obtained. This implies that there is moderately positive linear relationship between the two variables which supports the visual results of scatter plot. Positive because correlation coefficient is positive value which implies increase in retention rate is correlated with increase in graduation rate and vice-versa. Moderate because the value is around 0.5. Regression analysis was carried out using Excel Data Analysis Toolpak. The R-square value implies the goodness of fit. Thus, it can be said that this model is moderately good fit which is in agreement with the correlation results. Goodness of fit is moderate because the value is around 0.5. This further implies that 44.92 % of variance in graduation rate is accounted for by the retention rate. This also implies that approximately 65 % of variance is not accounted by the model. Analysis of Variance was carried out to calculate the significance of the model. The p-value of Regression equation obtained from the regression result is Graduation Rate = 0.28*Retention Rate + 25.42 Value of the slope obtained from regression is 0.28 which indicates positive relation between the two variables. The value of slope implies that with unit increase in Retention rate 0.28 unit increases in graduation rate was observed. t-test was performed to explore the significance of slope. Discussion In this study data of retention rates and graduation rates from 29 online colleges of USA were included and analysed with the aim to find relation between these two variables. Along with inspecting the relation, this study we also tried to find association between the two variables. Relation and association between these two continuous variables were visualised by plotting Scatter Plot. Average Retention Rate for the 29 online colleges was found greater than average Graduation Rate. It means number of students being retained or attend the college next year is greater than number of students completing their graduation. Average retention rate and average graduation rate in this study were found to be less than as reported by National Center for Education Statistics. National Center for Education Statistics also reported that higher graduation rate for females than males. Most selective institutions have higher retention rates compared to least selective institutions. Fernald (2011) reported retention rate of 89% and graduation rate of 78% for UC Santa Cruz which is quiet high from most of the colleges included in the study. Susan Wang (2011) reported that retention rate of Oregan State University for the Fall term 2009-2010 is 83.1% and graduation rate from 2004 to 2010 is 60.4%. A paper published by Florida State University Student Success Team states that graduation rate at public institute is 52.4%, much higher than average retention rate obtained in this study. Variation in retention rate is wider than in graduation rate. Minimum retention is 4 % which is very low while maximum retention rate is 100 %. But minimum graduation rate is 25 % and maximum graduation rate is 61 %. So, minimum graduation rate is greater than minimum retention rate while maximum graduation rate is lower than maximum retention rate. Moderately positive correlation was found between the two variables which is also supported by moderate goodness fit (R-squared) value. 44.92% of variation in graduation rate was accounted for by retention rate. So, approximately 55 % of variations are not explained by this model. Thus, there will be other environmental and social factors which affects graduation rate. Regression model was found to be significant based on Analysis of Variance results with significant slope. This means that these two variables share significant linear relationship and this relationship is not evident only by chance. This is also supported by the trend observed in the scatter plot. Value of slope obtained from regression equation display that unit increase in retention rate leads to 0.28 units increase in graduation rate. Thus, this study found moderate association between the two variables, retention rate and graduation rate, considered in the study. This study also found that there exist significant linear relationship between the two variables, retention rate and graduation rate, considered in the study. This study also found that graduation rate can be significantly predicted by retention rate. Graduation rate and retention rate are positively related. This study also found that there exist other factors which may affect graduation rate significantly as the fit of the model obtained in this study is moderately good. This study can be further extended by including all the colleges of USA and observe the trend. Also, various other factors which affect graduation rate should be studied and included. Recommendations As a President of South University I should implement strategies which would increase the graduation rate. South University have fairly good retention rate but graduation rate is poorest among other 27 online institutes included in the study. Measures should be taken to encourage student not only to continue to next year but also study well and complete their bachelors degree. As a President of University of Phoenix I should implement strategies which would increase the retention rate as well as the graduation rate. University of Phoenix have less graduation rate and retention rate is poorest among other 27 online institutes included in the study. And this retention rate is very poor, of only 4 %. If the University has part time faculty or faculty attrition rate is high then measures should be taken to retain teachers and professors as well. Many studies reported that not changing faculty members are also one of the reasons for low student retention rate. Some serious measures to be taken to motivate students to return to next year and also to complete the graduation rate. Interpersonal Conflict in the Movie Hitch Essay It is inevitable when two or more people disagree on something. Conflict is a result of a misunderstanding because of a miscommunication. In the movie Hitch (Mordaunt amp; Tadross, 2005) we can notice an interpersonal conflict between two people due to a lack of communication. Communication is a key role in any relationship, whether platonic or an intimate relationship. When starting a relationship it is primordial to be able to communicate effectively from the beginning in order to avoid any conflict.However â€Å"people are usually cautious about what they tell each other and how they say it, and they make a conscious effort to present positive information about themselves and to avoid conflict† (Sole, 2011). In this movie Hitch (Will Smith) and Sara (Eva Mendes) meet and are attracted to each other. They go through different stages of communication, talk about mostly everything while getting to know each other. Rapidly their platonic relationship turns into an intimate one. However even if the main characters are self-disclosing information with each other, Hitch leaves out pertinent information that would be shared in a relationship of this type. The interpersonal conflict in the movie Hitch is a lack of communication. The main characters Hitch and Sara have a fight that could have been avoided had they communicated effectively from the beginning if they would have taken time to do so. The conflict initiated because during the plot, a friend of hers ends a relationship due to the advice of a date doctor or date specialist.Later on she finds out that the â€Å"date doctor† is Hitch; the men with whom she has just started an intimate relationship with. Sara confronts Hitch to find out if he was actually the â€Å"date doctor,† and he confirms that effectively he is the â€Å"date doctor. † She does not want to listen to what Hitch had to say or even explain his side of the situation. He tries to reach out to her to explain what he d oes as a â€Å"date doctor,† but of course since she has already formed an opinion of him and what he does, she does not give him a chance to explain himself. Her attitude discourages Hitch to even try to communicate with her, and resolve the conflict.This movie gives us a perfect example of how a conflict was not handled effectively because assumptions were made, the character jumped to conclusion, due to this the issue became worse than it should have been. The communication dynamics in this was always done through someone else therefore one person would get upset, because he misunderstood the person that was giving him information. In the end of the movie, the interpersonal conflict was dealt appropriately, because both protagonists learned how to talk to each other and share their feelings, but it was a long process.The conflict in this movie escalated to the point that the couple communication style was quite aggressive â€Å"people who use an aggressive communication s tyle tend to dominate conversations. They typically speak at a high or low pitch, and their tone of voice can be demanding† (Sole, 2011). Finally they realize that there is a conflict and work things out. Hitch is a funny, entertaining movie about interpersonal communication, in which we can learn that handling interpersonal conflict would be easier if people would just face their problems, and communicate with each other without getting upset, and aggressive.In the long run, it is better to just be oneself, which can avoid a lot of the conflicts that we can see depicted in this movie.References Mordaunt, W. , amp; Tadross, M.
